Many people believe that psychologists treat only mental health conditions; however, this is untrue. Psychological treatments have been shown to be effective for a variety of medical conditions as well. Contrary to what many patients believe, they do have the ability to impact the overall success of many medical interventions using psychological treatments. Our group provides a number of psychological treatments for a variety of medical conditions such as cancer, hypertension, coronary heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders, endocrine disorders, neurologic Disorders, infectious Diseases and women’s health issues.
There are a number of psychosocial factors that affect illness and disease processes including environmental and work factors, poverty, sleep deprivation, work environments and hazardous conditions, lifestyle choices, diet and weight control, exercise, smoking and substance abuse, high-risk sexual behavior, exposure to ultraviolet sunlight, religious and spiritual practices, personality factors, somatization, and neurocognitive factors.
Our group designs a specialized treatment plan for each individual that is unique to his or her own needs. Typical interventions include psychoeducation regarding disease processes, cognitive behavioral coping tactics, stress management tactics, behavior management and stimulus control interventions, pain control tactics, and lifestyle changes.
We offer a number smoking cessation programs, weight management and exercise initiation programs, and stress management . We offer psychoeducation on sleep hygiene, addictions, and lifestyle decision making.
